For our Year 5 students, history came to life as they stepped beyond the classroom and into one of Lisbon’s most iconic neighbourhoods.
As part of their current enquiry into exploration and global connections, students visited Belém to discover how Portugal’s maritime past continues to shape the city today. Along the way, they explored historical landmarks, observed architectural features and discussed the impact of the Age of Discovery on cultures around the world.
The visit encouraged students to ask thoughtful questions, make real-world connections and reflect on how history influences the present. Travelling together by public transport also provided valuable opportunities to develop independence and confidence—an important part of our Lisbon as a Classroom approach.
Back in school, students will use their observations to inspire their writing, geography and humanities projects, demonstrating that some of the most meaningful learning happens beyond the school gates.
