The Lisboan is a school unlike any other in Lisbon, proud to be integrated into the heart of the city. Our historic building has been carefully and creatively repurposed into a bespoke, modern, carbon-neutral school that provides everything our students need for a world-class education

A SCHOOL AT THE HEART OF LISBON

The Lisboan is a school unlike any other in Lisbon.

Located in the vibrant city-centre district of Alcântara, our campus combines the character of a historic industrial building with the innovation, sustainability and flexibility required for a modern education. Here, students learn in inspiring spaces designed to support curiosity, creativity, collaboration and wellbeing.

More than a school building, The Lisboan is part of the city itself. While our campus provides the hub for daily learning, Lisbon becomes an extension of the classroom, offering students authentic opportunities to connect with their community and the world around them.

A HISTORIC BUILDING REIMAGINED FOR LEARNING

Originally built in 1908 as a pasta and flour factory, our building forms part of Lisbon’s rich industrial heritage.

Rather than constructing a new campus, we chose to preserve and transform this remarkable site, honouring its history while creating an exceptional environment for future generations.

Over 12,000 square metres have been carefully renovated and repurposed to create a contemporary learning environment that retains the character, scale and architectural features of the original building.

The result is a unique campus where heritage and innovation coexist — a place that inspires creativity, celebrates craftsmanship and provides students with spaces designed for modern learning.

DESIGNED FOR THE FUTURE

Our appreciation for the past is matched by our commitment to the future.

The Lisboan has been designed as a carbon-neutral campus, incorporating sustainable technologies and environmentally responsible practices throughout the building.

Key sustainability features include:

  • Carbon-neutral campus design
  • Solar energy generation
  • Energy-efficient systems
  • Natural light throughout the building
  • Passive cooling and shading strategies
  • Responsible use of resources and materials
  • Learning environments designed around environmental responsibility

By embedding sustainability into both our campus and curriculum, students develop a deeper understanding of their role in creating a more sustainable future.

SPACES DESIGNED FOR LEARNING

Every area of the school has been thoughtfully designed to support different ways of learning, encouraging students to explore, create, collaborate and think independently.

WELLBEING, SPORT & ACTIVE LIVING

Student wellbeing is central to life at The Lisboan.

Our facilities support both physical and emotional wellbeing, encouraging students to develop healthy habits, resilience and a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity.

Students benefit from:

  • Indoor and outdoor physical education opportunities
  • Access to sports facilities within the local community
  • Active use of Lisbon’s parks, waterfront and outdoor spaces
  • Opportunities for rowing, sailing and other outdoor pursuits

Our location enables students to experience sport and physical activity as part of everyday life, rather than being confined to a traditional campus setting.

LISBON AS A CLASSROOM

LEARNING BEYOND THE SCHOOL GATES

One of the most distinctive and unique aspects of a Lisboan education is our commitment to using the city itself as a learning environment.

Students regularly engage with the people, organisations, culture and opportunities that surround them, making learning more meaningful, relevant and connected to the real world.

Through our Lisbon as a Classroom programme, students benefit from access to:

  • Museums, galleries and cultural institutions
  • Universities and research centres
  • Local businesses and entrepreneurs
  • Community organisations
  • Historic landmarks and cultural sites
  • Environmental and sustainability projects
  • Sporting and outdoor learning opportunities

We are fortunate to have unique partnerships and opportunities on our doorstep, including access to university facilities, innovation hubs, the Tagus waterfront and the Metropolitan Orchestra of Lisbon, located just a short walk from the school.

By learning within the city, students develop confidence, independence, cultural awareness and a strong sense of connection to the community around them.

A CAMPUS CONNECTED TO THE COMMUNITY

Situated in the heart of Alcântara, The Lisboan is part of one of Lisbon’s most dynamic and creative neighbourhoods.

Surrounded by innovation, culture, entrepreneurship and opportunity, our students are immersed in a community that reflects the skills and mindsets needed for the future.

At The Lisboan, learning does not stop at the classroom door. It extends into the city, the community and the wider world — creating an educational experience that is both deeply connected and uniquely Lisbon.
