This is the story of a former pasta factory that has been transformed into an international school. Located in Alcântara, an area of Lisbon that is increasingly attracting companies, developers, and real estate investors, particularly in the residential sector, the Lisboan International School was established in the iconic buildings of the former “A Napolitana” pasta factory: facilities acquired from the Auchan Group, which previously had offices there. “I’ve visited many school projects over the years, and for me, this is an absolutely unique project,” says Gudmundur Jonsson, the Icelandic director of the school, which began operating this academic year, to idealista/news.
Let’s break it down: Lisboan International School is the first school in Europe from the Artemis Education Group, which originated in Doha (Qatar) and is headquartered in the United Kingdom – it already has three schools in Qatar and two more in the pipeline in Oman – and is dedicated to developing new school projects worldwide. It came to fruition following an investment of €75 million*. But the numbers and interesting facts don’t end there:
- It has a total area of 11,500 square meters (m2), with capacity for more than 1,200 students, from three to 18 years old;
- The campus includes, for example, science and technology laboratories (STEM Hub), libraries, art and design rooms, dance, yoga and music studios, and a 170-seat theater;
- The school will offer a British international curriculum , with the progressive implementation of the International Baccalaureate (IB) leading up to the full Diploma Programme in 2027;
- In addition to classes, students will participate in the Lisboan Experience program, which includes activities such as robotics, photography, debate, community service, and sports like rowing, surfing, and climbing;
- Sustainability is the watchword, being an official and certified “shelter” for seismic situations.
