Originally from Iceland, Guðmundur brings a unique blend of academic, artistic and leadership expertise to his role as Founding Principal of The Lisboan International School.
With over 20 years of international educational experience, Guðmundur has taught Theory of Knowledge, Geography, Music, and Critical Thinking, primarily within the International Baccalaureate framework. He has served in international schools across Serbia, Italy, China, the UAE and South Korea, and was previously the Rektor of the United World College Red Cross Nordic in Norway.
Guðmundur holds an MA in Education from the Westminster Institute of Education at Oxford Brookes University. He is a passionate advocate for critical thinking, democracy, and community voice, believing in the transformative power of education to nurture human flourishing and global citizenship. At The Lisboan, he aims to create an inclusive, values-driven school that inspires curiosity, creativity, and sustainability in a rapidly changing world.
Further to his qualifications in education, Guðmundur also studied archaeological science at University College London (UCL) and the University of Sheffield. He has directed significant research projects for UCL, the National Museum of Iceland and the University of Cambridge, focusing on Viking Age and Medieval settlements.
In addition to his academic accomplishments, Guðmundur is a trained bass vocalist, having studied at the Reykjavik Academy of Singing and Vocal Arts and the Royal Academy of Music in London. He has performed operatic roles and lieder recitals, showcasing his deep passion for the arts.
