Early Years

Students bring a natural sense of curiosity, energy and motivation to the classroom. We support and develop this through play, in both adult-initiated and child-led experiences and interactions.

A breadth of experiences

We use the environment, both inside and outside, to give students a breadth of experiences that allow them to make sense of the world around them.

In Early Years, the curriculum is split into seven areas of learning based on an enhanced version of the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile from the UK.

We start with the three prime areas that are vital for developing children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning. These areas represent shared cultural tools and knowledge, supporting their social development.

Underpinning all learning are the Characteristics of Effective Learning:

  • Playing and Exploring
  • Active Learning
  • Creative and Critical Thinking

These characteristics guide the learning in our classrooms, our students’ experiences and the resources we use.

Our youngest students’ learning is enhanced through specialist teachers and staff. Students in the Early Years will have specialist lessons in Portuguese Language and Culture, Art, Music and PE. Our Early Years students also have access to the primary library.

At The Lisboan, our commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals demonstrates our social responsibility. Throughout the Early Years, students are introduced to big ideas that start with understanding and managing themselves before acting on this at home and at school.
