Our Philosophy

LEARNING WITH PURPOSE, CONFIDENCE AND JOY

At The Lisboan, we believe that children learn best when they feel known, supported and inspired. Our educational approach combines the academic rigour of the internationally recognised Cambridge curriculum with a nurturing environment that places each child at the centre of their learning journey.

We maintain high expectations for every student while recognising that success looks different for every learner. Our classrooms are purposeful and ambitious, but never driven by pressure. Instead, we foster curiosity, confidence and independence, helping students become motivated learners who take ownership of their growth.

Our goal is simple: to help every child flourish academically, socially and emotionally.

A CAMBRIDGE FOUNDATION, THE LISBOAN WAY

The Cambridge curriculum provides a strong academic framework, but how we teach is what makes the difference.

At The Lisboan, learning is:

  • Rigorous, but not rigid
  • Challenging, but supportive
  • Structured, but flexible
  • Ambitious, but child-centred

Students are encouraged to think critically, ask questions, solve problems and develop the confidence to express their ideas. We believe that happy, engaged students achieve more, and we create classrooms where children feel safe to take risks, make mistakes and grow.

EVERY CHILD KNOWN AND SUPPORTED

Strong relationships are at the heart of our school.

Every student is supported by a dedicated Homeroom Teacher who meets with them daily, providing guidance, encouragement and pastoral care. This daily connection ensures that each child feels seen, valued and supported throughout their school day.

Our teachers know their students well – their strengths, interests, challenges and aspirations – allowing them to provide personalised support and meaningful opportunities for growth.

Learning at The Lisboan is designed to spark curiosity and make meaningful connections across subjects.

Each class explores two carefully chosen themes per term, providing rich opportunities for inquiry, discussion and discovery. These themes encourage students to make connections between different areas of learning while developing a deeper understanding of the world around them.

In our Early Years and Primary years, teachers actively incorporate students’ interests into the learning process, helping children feel invested in their education and inspired to explore new ideas.

We recognise that children learn in different ways and should have multiple opportunities to demonstrate what they know.

From Primary onwards, students engage in a wide variety of learning experiences, including:

  • Independent learning
  • Partner work
  • Collaborative group projects
  • Research and inquiry activities
  • Creative tasks and problem-solving challenges
  • Discussions, debates and presentations

Rather than relying on a single approach, we encourage students to explore, create, communicate and reflect, helping them develop a broad range of skills and strengths.

CELEBRATING LEARNING, TOGETHER

At The Lisboan, we believe learning should be shared and celebrated. Students regularly showcase their work, ideas and achievements, developing confidence, communication skills and pride in their learning.

Student presentations are an important part of school life, with Primary students presenting twice each term and Secondary students once per term. These opportunities help students become articulate, reflective and confident communicators.

Twice each month, the whole school comes together for a Learning Celebration Assembly to share projects, recognise achievements and learn from one another. These gatherings strengthen our sense of community and reinforce our belief that every student’s contribution matters.

THE DIFFERENCE WE SEE

At The Lisboan, education is about much more than academic outcomes.

Throughout the year, we see students become more confident, more independent and more willing to challenge themselves. They develop stronger communication skills, greater resilience and a genuine love of learning.

The growth we witness is reflected not only in academic progress, but also in the way students participate, collaborate, lead and contribute to our community.

By the end of each year, the transformation is remarkable – students leave with greater confidence, deeper knowledge and the skills they need to flourish both in school and beyond.

OUR APPROACH TO BEHAVIOUR AND RELATIONSHIPS

At The Lisboan, we believe that positive relationships, high expectations and mutual respect are the foundation of a thriving learning community.

Guided by our BOA Principles – Belong, Own and Act – and our values of curiosity, kindness, connection, resilience and integrity, we help students develop the self-awareness, responsibility and social skills needed to flourish both in school and beyond.

A POSITIVE AND RESTORATIVE APPROACH

Our approach to behaviour is rooted in teaching, guidance and growth.

Rather than focusing solely on consequences, we help students understand the impact of their actions, learn from mistakes and make better choices in the future. We recognise that behaviour, like learning, is a developmental process and that every challenge presents an opportunity for growth.

We focus on:

  • Recognising and celebrating positive behaviour.
  • Building strong relationships based on trust and respect.
  • Helping students reflect on their choices and learn from mistakes.
  • Repairing harm and restoring relationships when difficulties arise.
  • Supporting students to develop self-regulation, empathy and resilience.

WHAT WE EXPECT FROM OUR STUDENTS

We encourage all students to:

  • Show respect for themselves, others and the environment.
  • Take ownership of their actions and decisions.
  • Demonstrate kindness, honesty and integrity.
  • Contribute positively to the school community.
  • Embrace differences and treat others with empathy and understanding.

These expectations help create a culture where every student feels safe, valued and able to learn.

LEARNING THROUGH BELONG, OWN , ACT

Our behaviour expectations are closely connected to our BOA Principles:

Belong – Building positive relationships and helping others feel included.

Own – Taking responsibility for actions, choices and personal growth.

Act – Making thoughtful decisions and contributing positively to the community.

SUPPORTING GROWTH AND CHARACTER

When behaviour does not meet expectations, we respond with clear, consistent and age-appropriate support. Students are guided to reflect on their actions, understand their impact and take steps to repair relationships where necessary.

Our aim is not simply to manage behaviour, but to help young people develop the character, confidence and emotional intelligence they need to navigate life successfully.

Because at The Lisboan, we believe that learning how to live and work well with others is just as important as academic achievement.
